Every day, on the Christian radio station I listen to, they have a question for the morning. You can call in share your answer/thoughts and then sometimes they enter you for a contest, if you call.
The question today was "what kind of legacy do want to be known for?" And then one of the morning hosts asked jokingly what do you do if you want to change or re-write your legacy? I thought that was a very interesting and thought-provoking question.
How can you re-write your legacy? Or maybe your current legacy is fine but you want to improve or sharpen your legacy! Personally, I want to sharpen my legacy. I want to be know more than just a nice person. (To provide an example, I thought I'd share some of my legacy thoughts from this morning to show how I have worked and am working through this. For what it's worth...)
My first thought was that I want to be known as someone who gave generously and abundantly. But then it occurred me that this gives me too many accolades, which I don't deserve regardless of how much I give.
My second thought was that I want to be known as someone who gave generously and abundantly because God blessed me. But I was unsatisfied with that...still too much me.
My next thought was that I want to be known as someone who lived simply so that God could use more of the resources He has given me, for His glory. To be honest, this one scares me. To live simply would take significant changes...hard changes, at first. So in an attempt to "soften the blow"...
My current thought is that I want to be known as someone who obeyed and followed God, regardless of the cost, whether financially, physically, or relationally. But really, while this is nice and not as scary, it is not clear and concise unless it was followed up by very specific goals.
Anyhow, these are thoughts in process...I'll probably mull over this for awhile yet. I encourage you to think about your legacy. Whether or not we think about it, we are leaving a legacy behind us. But I believe it is possible to change your legacy, if that is, in fact, a desire. You are not bound to be stay the person you are...your past or present circumstances do not have to define you but can be part of a testimony of how much you have changed, grown, or inspired others, in light of your past or present.

I want to be...
...whoever God wants me to be
...full of joy and contentment
...abundantly generous
...serving in ministry
...a leader, a mentor, a student
...a diverse reader
...more disciplined with my health
...willing to try new things
...able to cry with those are crying and laugh with those who are laughing
...a wife and mother
...a singer or a chef when in Heaven
...a mini gardener
...able to see my brother come to love Jesus
...one who speaks truth and wisdom
...one who laughs easily
...prayerful
...able to speak another language
...thawing out on a warm beach somewhere
...able to visit Germany next year
...more like Jesus

Time on my hands
I just looked at my last post where I talked about doing Beth Moore's book club thing because "I will have time on my hands."
Oh geez...
I suppose it's all relative but between yesterday and today, I no longer believe that I'll have time on my hands. None. Whatsoever.
I will indeed be out of school until the middle of May and then that class goes until the beginning of July. Then I will be out of class from then until the end of August. The rest of the year, I'll be finishing up my Master's degree...woohoo!
However, during my non-school times, I have many great ideas and plans on what to do with my time.
Life keeps moving.

However, during my non-school times, I have many great ideas and plans on what to do with my time.
- In August my class will be all for my thesis paper...so I want to get a head start on it so that come December, I'll be done. So I have 10 books to read, that's I've already purchased, and will need to figure out some way to categorize my research.
- Red Cross Disaster Training...I have no idea how long this training might be but it is something I would very much like to do and something that could benefit me in almost any country or situation.
- TESOL certification...I found this online place which sounds credible. It's a work-at-your-own-pace situation. Again this would be good in almost any future country or situation. I could easily do this program but the good time for me to start would be immediately and finish before my next class in May. My "conflict" is that this time would be a good time to start my thesis.
- Plus, I signed up to do some extra teaching at my youth group and for another youth group. So I'm already committed here.
Life keeps moving.

Challenging Me
I have been known to challenge myself to cut something out of my diet for a month or two, just to see if I could. And I did it every time, relatively easily.
However, when it comes to persevering over larger things, such as general eatting habits or exercise, that is where I tend to cut myself some slack. I set a goal, don't push through the hard moments or make an excuse or two, and then fail.
Since the new year is about resolutions and setting goals, I've decided to set a few "challenges" for myself...just to see if I can do it. I know I'm a little late but oh well! Most of the challenge will be month-long, with the exception of the first:
Jan 18-31: drink 12 cups of water every day (This will be fairly easy for me overall however I am awful on the weekends with water consumption)
February: walk or run at least 4 times a week
March: No eatting out (unless invited by family or friends...at the most 5 times total) and no eatting after 7pm.
April: No sugar...hmm...this will be interesting
May: Walk/Run at least 6 miles every week (okay, I know this isn't huge...but it will be a good step for me...maybe the last two weeks I can increase it to 8/10 miles)
June: No beverages other than coffee or water (sorry, but I'm not cutting coffee out...ain't gonna do it.)
We'll start with this and evaluate my progress along the way.
I can handle this. 30 days...piece of cake, right?

Starting Something "New"
Today is the first day of a "new" year-long venture. I say "new" because I've done this before although its been a number of years.
I'm going to read the Bible in a year, chronologically.
I went online to find a plan and found http://www.ewordtoday.com/year/. You first select which Bible translation you are going to read from...I chose New American Standard Bible. At the same time, they give you five reading options: from Genesis to Revelations, Chronological, Historical (when the books were written), the New Testament first and then Old Testament, or lastly, reading parts of the Old Testament and New Testament together. Whew! Like I've stated, I chose the Chronological option.
Then you choose a starting date. You can choose to start on the 1st or 15th of every month. Being that I found this site on the 18th-19th of September, I opted to start on October 1st. With that comes the reading list, which I copied/pasted onto a Word document and will post in my house.
Why am I doing this? Good question!

- I believe the Bible is God's word and I want to spend regular, consistent time reading what God has to say to me. However, I stink at being a consistent Bible reader. I know part of it is just self-discipline however I believe this chart will not only help me be accountable but will help me learn the discipline of consistent reading over time.
- Over the half year, I feel like I am emotionally floundering a bit. I keep thinking "I need to hear from you, God...I need you to speak to me!" Since the Bible is God's Word, that will be one of the ways He will speak to me and that means I need to be reading it in order to hear from Him.
- I chose the chronological option because I like reading things in order...it shows a fluid picture of history. Along with that, I will get to see how God moved and worked consistently through history and through His people. How one instruction, one mistake, one leader, etc, changed/impacted the rest of the story.
I'm excited for this. I thought about trying to blog my reading adventures but to be honest, I don't think I can be disciplined enough to blog every day about what I'm reading and my thoughts on it. Discipline...clearly I need more of it! :)

Hobby or Gluten for Punishment
I like crafts...I like learning new crafts, trying out various things, and creating things with my hands, which is why I love playing in the kitchen so much. However this is not about cooking.
I learned how to crochet in college, which means I've been crocheting for 6 years now, I guess. I honestly still don't know if this is an activity I enjoy or dislike.
I have discovered that I only have a tolerance for small projects. The biggest thing I make are baby blankets. I have started three big (queen/king) blankets and have quit them all about 1/6th of the way into it because I get the point where I am so tired of the blanket and don't want to work on it any more. To further emphasize the point, I am tired of working on baby blankets when I reach the end, which is why that is generally the biggest project I do.
However, in an attempt to use up the oodles of yarn I have around my apartment, I am attempting yet another big blanket. I have dubbed this "the ugly blanket" because it was be filled with random colors of yarn that I want to get rid of. I showed my sister what I've done thus far and her comment was that it looks like a blanket that a grandma would have. I think she's right...but if I finish this, I'll be so proud!
So back to the beginning...do I love or hate crocheting? I think it's both. I like crafts and starting projects. I also like completing and achieving things. I think I dislike the in-between part...putting in the hours of work and tediously crocheting back and forth, back and forth, back and forth.
I hope this insight doesn't reflect how I approach the rest of my life. Maybe I should think on that!

"We Will Exercise"
There was some kid's show my brother watched to make fun of (Bananas In Pajamas??), when he was little and the one phrase that has stuck with me is his imitation of "We Will Exercise."
Exercise is something I have always been awful at...even in middle school when I actually played sports. Even though I did it, I never NEVER enjoyed it (okay, in middle school, I didn't hate it) but the sweating and being in pain never seemed worthwhile. Maybe that is where my vision has been skewed.
Over the past ten years or so, it has always been easier to justify not exercising rather than to fight to add it into my schedule. Well, after months/years of putting it off, I found myself with a lighter schedule for three months, since I'm in between classes. Before the last class ended, I started telling myself, "I have no reason now not to exercise....my too busy excuse is gone."
I've always thought I would enjoy running so I went online found an 8 week program that takes you from doing nothing to running 3 miles. Today I start week 6! I am 90% certain that by end of week 8, I will not be able to run 3 miles yet but I am proud at myself for sticking to the schedule and am doing my best. As of this past Saturday, I ran 12 of the 20 minutes, which I think is pretty darn good. My goal is still the 3 mile mark...I have date with a friend to run around Greenlake in Seattle, which is 2.6 miles. So once the 8 week program is over, I'm determine to continue pushing myself to the 3 mile mark. I recently bought official running shoes...the salesman assured me that once I reach the 3 mile mark, I'll start putting miles in and find myself doing 5-10 miles in no time. I blinked...I coughed...I laughed and then told him we'll take things one step at a time.
My overall goal is to keep exercising, even when school starts up again in October, because it will have become a part of my regular schedule. In the words of another cartoon "Can we do it? Yes, we can!"

Mood Swings
I am in the mood to play in the kitchen. I want to try new recipes, desserts and entrees.
I am not in the mood to work on homework. PTL I only have about 1 week left.
I am in the mood to start exercising again.
I am not in the mood to endure...I have never reached the point where exercising is enjoyable...if there is such a point.
I am in the mood to become more active in my church.
I am not in the mood to over-extend myself, which is a good thing.
I am in the mood to play with my cameras.
I am not in the mood to get my newest camera cleaned and fixed.
I am in the mood to actively save more money, which is needed.
I am not in the mood to stop spending money, which is bad.
I am in the mood to clean my apartment...throw away junk and minimize.
I am not usually in the mood to do anything about it.
I am in the mood to read some books...I have about 20 books that have been waiting...beckoning me...enticing me with their stories, words and wisdom!
I am in the mood for coffee dates with friends or dinner parties or walks...soon!
I am in the mood to celebrate my friends new babies.
I am in the mood to visit my grandparents but that might have to wait until November.
Moods are funny things. They are quite dependent on energy levels and emotions. My current class is about making decisions using data. Although I appreciate that I am an emotional person by nature, I sure would like to be more data-minded and driven. I worked with two people once who told me that they were like steam-rollers...never slowing down, endless energy, which was true! I am not that type of person. However, because of school, I have allowed myself to become quite low energy. My life needs a power-surge...I think I'll use the list above to set goals for myself this summer!

Things I'd Enjoy Learning
--Canning Foods. The closest thing I do in this area is to make apple butter a couple times a year. I received a wonderful (and easy) recipe from a friend for apple butter but it doesn't actually required a canning pot or other related utensils. I would love to be shown how to can fruits and veggies and to play around with various ingredients. Okay, I know I can always find a recipe online...I'm pretty good with following instructions but would love even more to be shown how (along with little secrets or bits-of-advise) from someone who is an "expert" canner.
--Art. I never took art in school...okay, I mean high school. The only art related class I took was choir. All my other classes were more serious in nature, not that I regret that by any means. But I have discovered over the years, whenever I've been shown artistic crafts, that I love them. Yes, I do tend to think too much instead of just "feeling" the art, whatever that might mean, but I do enjoy myself. I'd love to be taught basic painting, ceramics, pottery (same as ceramics??), calligraphy, weaving, cake decorating, mosaics, and almost anything else. The only thing I don't think I'd enjoy would be sewing or any form of needlepoint...but maybe I just need to give it a better chance.
--Gardening. I know gardening is not rocket science. Part of my lack of trying in this area because I live in an apartment with no personal yard to play with. However, I would love to grow my own veggies, fruits, and herbs. I'm sure there some good tricks of the trade though which is what I'd really like to learn one day.
--Kosher living. Bear with me here...this tends to be harder for fellow Christians to swallow, at least in my experience. No, I am not Jewish and no, I am not promoting legalism in regards to food. However, from what I have read about Judaism and living kosher, the main point is that by eatting and living kosher, one is more acutely aware of "ordinary" and the "sacred." Too often I throw food on my plate and into my body without much thought. Kosher living brings God into daily food choices and then consequently into daily living.

Resolutions or Goals for 2009
I think setting goals is typically a good thing, if only for the fact that it makes you think about your life and refocus your direction. Every year I tend to look back at the past year, assess what I've experienced and what I've learned and then look forward to what could be.
This year is mildly important as I will be turning 30 in about 5 months. I know 30 is just another age but it feels like a bit of a mile-marker and therefore, I'd like to make 2009 a year where I continue to enrich my life. I have come up with the following resolutions/goals:
--Minimize spending, increase saving. Between school and rent, I naturally don't have a bunch of extra money but I do have a bunch of things in my apt that I don't really need. To accomplish this, I'd like to cut out all fast food or coffee trips. I also spend a fair chunk of my money on books, movies, and music...with the exception of school books, I should try to utilize my library card anything something is wanted. Honestly, I'm not too concerned with the saving part of my goal...if I have more money in my bank account I will be more inclined to give it away or use it to visit someone, both of which I believe are valuable and good.
--Live a more healthy life. Making intentional choices to eat more fruit/veggies, drink 8 cups of water, cut down on sweets by not buying them in the first place, and trying to fit exercise into my life. I've been disciplined before...I know I can do it again!
--Take two or three trips this year: one to visit grandparents in California, one to visit friends in Calgary, and one to visit the countries I love the most: Holland and Germany. The last one entirely depends on plane tickets costs. If this trip doesn't happen, then I will most definitely accomplish the California and Calgary trips.
--Do my best in graduate school...ideally get an "A" in all my classes.
--Get together once every other month with someone for coffee...six times in one year...I can definitely handle that!
Well, those are a good start. I should probably hash out details more for the first two goals, in order to be successful. Good luck with your resolutions! May God give you wisdom and strength to accomplish all that's good!

Revisiting Goals
Back on November 24th, I wrote a list of things I wished to accomplish during my two months off of school. I know I'm a little over the half-way point but thought I'd revisit my list to chart the progress.
So here is my wish list for all the things I hope to accomplish during that time:
--crochet one baby blanket and scarf...completed both...I'll try to post a photo later.
--clean my poor neglected apt which was been crying for attention for months (this includes throwing out oodles of junk that I don't need!)...I started this and have already given away a stack of books and clothes. I have another pile of stuff I'll be giving away. But I don't feel like I've simplified my apt too much! Maybe I'll try to do more in January.
--re-read Harry Potter series (not a necessity but would enjoy it!)...completed this! I read the whole series in December and loved them all over again!
--finally clean my car...won't even think to mention how long it's been!...ummm...nope...still a mess
--create a "ministry resume"...started this...will finish this month.
--help out more with the youth group, with planning or whatever is needed...I've put the offer out there to help more but haven't really done anything.
--email people I've neglected to let them know I'm alive and still care!...I've emailed a few people...could/should do more!
--save money...this is a prayer request and "to-do" item...sigh...the Lord has help me with this one! I can't say I've saved much but I've been able to pay off several bills.

Wish List
With the 2 month school break that I'm facing in a week, my head is partly spinning thinking about my final paper/project and partly thinking about how I will fill my time during December and January, since I'm skipping the next class.
So here is my wish list for all the things I hope to accomplish during that time:
--crochet one baby blanket and scarf
--clean my poor neglected apt which was been crying for attention for months (this includes throwing out oodles of junk that I don't need!)
--re-read Harry Potter series (not a necessity but would enjoy it!)
--finally clean my car...won't even think to mention how long it's been!
--create a "ministry resume"
--help out more with the youth group, with planning or whatever is needed
--email people I've neglected to let them know I'm alive and still care!
--save money...this is a prayer request and "to-do" item...sigh...
I'll let you know how my list goes...but first I need to survive this week and finish my paper!
